Welcome to the K-9 Hospice!
Now in partnership with the Humane Society of the Greater River Valley

The K-9 Hospice is a 501(c)3 non-profit home for dogs needing either temporary care and shelter or a permanent place to live out their days with plenty of love, sunshine, health care, and places to dig. Here, love is given, spirits mended, and wounds healed. Now working in partnership with the Humane Society of the Greater River Valley (not associated with the HSUS), we are a no-kill rescue site where dogs are getting one more chance at life.
Look around our small site, and please consider how you might help - by donating or volunteering, by sponsoring a dog, by fostering or adoption, even just by spreading the word about this home. Thank you for visiting - come back again soon to see our updates or new photos!
What I Would Say If You Could Hear Me
I can feel life ebbing,
And I will go willingly.
This face that feels cracked-leather old,
Is but 2 years in this world.
Sister and I abandoned as pups,
Found sick and confused by the rescue
who fed us and watered and cleaned and cared.
Here life is basic, the place full
Of the noise and smells of so many
Others like me, I cannot really sleep.
When I get in the yard, I wonder,
Who will bite me? What noise is after me?
What will make this fragile skin break open
and ooze in places I cannot lick?
People shake their head as they look at me,
And make jokes about naming me Purple.
I laugh too but wonder, can no one love an ugly dog
Who can’t keep hair?
I smile and wiggle and plead for their touch.
And struggle to show how much I could love them.
If they would have me.
Even so, there is pleasure as I try hard to
Run with the others in the yard.
Tripping over my silly feet with the
Long yellowed nails that make me hurt.
My bones ache and muscles tremble,
And though I try to keep up
The others rush over me and cheer as I fall.
The People care for me, such as they can,
I hear ‘not enough time people money’,
Which means nothing to me.
What-might-have-been itches in my head like a fly
Eating at my skin on a hot day.
People just for sister and me, our very own,
Who would stroke that place between our eyes,
And call us Good Girls. And I would be beautiful.
I’ll welcome that final sleep,
An end to this madness of fear and hope.
When at last I can live my dream of
Ears flopping in wind I create by racing on strong limbs,
My coat rippling and shining and full.
I do my best here, such as it is, while I await that sleep.
I can’t help but wonder what my life might’ve been
If I’d been loved.
Current Needs:

Medical supplies: We want to have each dog room outfitted with basic medical supplies such as self-adhesive gauze, other bandages of various sizes, small scissors, nail clippers, cleaning supplies, etc.
Supply cabinets: We need supply cabinets in each of our dog rooms. If you have a used one that still has some life left in it, or if you can donate a new cabinet, let us know! Preferred cabinets would be metal, with shelves for blankets, medical and other supplies, and latching doors (to keep the dogs out, of course).
Skilled plumbing and electrical people needed this spring and summer: plumbing needs are first, but we also need to get new wiring put into each of our dog buildings.
Fencing: We need to finish the perimeter fencing as well as create additional dog run areas so the dogs have added secure room to play and be outside in the sun. We are especially looking for 6 ft chainlink fencing and posts. If you or someone you know is taking down an old fence, let us know! For the time being, there's no such thing as too much fencing!
If you'd like to help our dogs, you can make a donation through our secure PayPal link below, or click here for our email and standard mail addresses!

Looking to adopt? We have many wonderful dogs just waiting for a forever home! See some of the dogs right here by visiting our photo album, or go to www.petfinder.com/shelters/AR216.html to see featured K-9 Hospice dogs. If you are unsure whether you are ready to adopt or not, email us at k9hospicecorp@yahoo.com - we can help you decide whether now is a good time.
If you are considering adoption, check out our adoption page. Adopting a rescue dog is a wonderful thing to do, and a blessing to our animals - but please keep in mind that it also takes a great deal of love and patience, especially at first, to help the dog adjust to a new home. When adopting, please plan to give the dog approximately 3 weeks to settle in, develop a bond with you, and to let his or her personality really start to shine!
